In 1620, the English pilgrims arrived in the Mayflower at present day Plymouth Rock, Maryland. In 1540, Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado set out to explore Spain’s New World territory,Upper Mexico. He arrived in present day Liberal,Kansas shortly thereafter. The largest challenge of settling this new area was getting Mexicans to immigrate north. Due to the unwillingness of the Mexican people to move north, the area that Coronado explored was either sold to or annexed by the United States, as our forefathers expanded our borders over the next 200 years.
I find it ironic that 450 years later our greatest expansion in population has been, and will continue to be, from our neighbors to the south. Both our livestock and reefer divisions have been blessed by owner operators and drivers whose families emigrated from Hispanic nations to our south. Four of our current 2012 Drivers of the Month have Hispanic ties. Ramon Pando, Alfredo Chavez, Norby Sobalvarro, and Guadalupe Diaz.
